There is an alternate method that I'm about to try on my O-290. You mount an accelerometer only on the case behind the prop. I bought a Witmotion bluetooth 3 axis accelerometer off Amazon unit that reports mm/s and frequency, among other parameters, to your phone wirelessly. The thing is about 1 inch square in size, no cables to hook up. You can even mount it and go take measurements while flying, as it will run about 8 hrs on an internal rechargeable battery. Anyway, you take an initial reading. Then install a known "trial weight", say, 25g, in any one of the ring gear holes, take a reading. Move the trial weight to 120 deg off, run again, take a reading. Do the same at 240 deg. So, one initial reading, then 3 readings with a known mass at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock. I have a phone app from a company called ADASH. You input the initial vibe value, the trial weight mass, and the vibe values of the 3 trial weight runs. The phone app calculates the displacement centroids of each run, tells you how much and where to put the final weight to eliminate the displacement. This is a widely used method for balancing industrial equipment.

Somebody posted on vansairforce (I think) that they lost their plane when they couldn't find the boost pump in a hurry. The ideal spot is at the end of the row of switches, where you can find it by location, label, and in your case, color. After all, you're unlikely to need lights in an emergency. The engine was vibrating. You added some weights near the prop, and the amount of vibration was reduced. You don't really know that the prop was out of balance. The prop could be perfectly balanced. Maybe the engine is "out of balance". Adding some weight in the right spot near the prop could just be countering some sort of engine imbalance/vibration. It seems like you should start by taking off the prop and running the test. Almost certainly the four cylinders are not perfectly balanced. One cylinder is almost certainly a little stronger than the rest, and one cylinder is almost certainly a little weaker than the rest. A little more or a little less fuel. Timing slightly off. Dirty spark plug. Try disconnecting one of the spark plugs (not both) to one of the cylinders and see what happens to the vibration. I would be very interested in hearing your comments on this.

What other things do you do to make sure that everything is running as smoothly as possible? Do you make sure that your EGTs all peak at exactly the same time? Do you have a Thunderbolt engine? Thunderbolt engines are supposed to run more smoothly. Do they actually? What does Lycoming do to make a Thunderbolt engine run more smoothly? I think that this would make an interesting topic for a RUclips video -- how to optimize everything.
